A usually quiet neighbourhood was rocked by violence Saturday night as three men in their 20s were shot and wounded in N.D.G..
The shooting occurred at Mayfair and Fielding Aves. in the densely populated neighbourhood at about 9 p.m. One victim was shot in the chest and died of his injuries Sunday night in a nearby hospital. Another man, who suffered a lower-body bullet wound, remains in the hospital in critical condition; the third was released Sunday morning.
Police are treating the case as a murder and double attempted murder.
“I remember hearing a single shot and then about six or seven more. Then I heard a woman screaming, so I ran to my balcony,” said Leila, a Fielding Ave. resident who did not want her last name published. “I saw a black car speed away, so I called the cops and told them.”
Two of the victims, including the deceased 23-year-old, were found at the scene of the crime. The third victim was shot in the arm and fled through a backyard, police said. He was found on Mariette Ave. and taken to the hospital. He has since been released.
Montreal police Constable Olivier Lapointe said the murder could have been gang related.
Police officers combed the area for evidence Saturday and interrogated nearby residents, but have not arrested a suspect in the shooting.
The three victims were known to police, who say they have not yet found a motive.
The homicide was Montreal’s 22nd this year.
At the corresponding date last year, there were 24 murders in the city.
